Why So Many Families Begin Their First Birthday Session With a Family Portrait
Before the cake.
Before the balloons.
Before the frosting-covered fingers.
We love to begin our First Birthday Portrait Experiences with the three of you (or more if there are siblings!).

This First Year Changed You, Too
When most parents book a First Birthday Session, they’re thinking about the baby.
The tiny outfit.
The cake smash.
The milestone.
But this first year wasn’t only theirs.
It was yours.
You became parents.
You learned each other in a new way.
You survived sleepless nights and celebrated first laughs.
And that deserves to be in the story.
Why We Begin Here
At one year old, babies are aware.
They’re attached to mom and/or dad.
They’re often clingy.
Sometimes a little unsure of new people.
If we start by placing them alone on a chair and stepping away, it can feel overwhelming to them. Some babies cry, not because they’re unhappy, but because they think they’re being left behind.
But when they’re in your arms? They relax. They feel safe.
So we begin where they feel most secure, and that is with you.

What It Looks Like
We style everyone together during your planning call … simple, timeless colors that flatter mom and dad and photograph beautifully on our classic white background.
On the day of the First Birthday Session, we move intentionally:
• Full family first
• Then mom and baby
• Then dad and baby
• Any siblings
All within the first 10 minutes.
This isn’t a full family session.
It’s the opening chapter.
We move quickly so baby stays fresh and happy. We don’t want to tire them out before we get to smash their cake! 🎂 and in those first 10 minutes we create magic! Portraits you will treasure forever.

What Happens When You See Them
When families return for their Design Consultation and see these portraits for the first time, something shifts. Mom sees her whole family together and exhales. Dad melts … especially when he sees the portrait of just him and his baby. The siblings may see the photos and feel important because they were part of the First Birthday celebration too!
And almost every time, there’s a quiet look that says: “We did this.”
That first year.
The growing.
The learning.
The becoming parents.
It’s there on the screen.

When It Is Displayed In Your Home
When one of these portraits becomes artwork in your home, it turns into something more than a photograph. It becomes proof of love. 💓
Your baby grows up seeing their family together every single day.
“This is my family.”
“I am loved.”
“I was celebrated.”
For mom, it becomes an emotional anchor. A reminder that this house isn’t just decorated.
It’s lived in.
It’s loved in.
It’s home.

What if you are thinking “Let’s Just Focus on the Baby…”?
We hear this comment sometimes … and of course the baby matters. It is their First Birthday after all!! But I want you to think about this for a moment ….
The portraits with the balloons will be playful.
The portraits of the cake smash will be joyful.
The solo portraits will capture all aspects of their personality.
But the family portrait tells the beginning of the story.
Years from now, your child will love seeing themselves covered in cake.
But they’ll also love seeing all of you together at the very start.
It’s not either/or.
It’s the whole story.

The First Chapter
So many families choose to begin their First Birthday Session this way.
Not because they have to.
But because when they imagine this year years from now… They don’t just want to remember what their baby looked like. They want to remember who they were together.
If You’re Planning a First Birthday Session
If you have a First Birthday Session scheduled, or you’re considering one, let’s talk about including your family at the beginning.
We’ll guide you on wardrobe.
We’ll move quickly.
We’ll make it feel easy.
And we’ll create something timeless that celebrates not just your baby… but the year that changed all of you.

You Don’t Have to Feel “Ready”
You don’t have to lose the baby weight.
You don’t have to feel perfect.
You just have to show up and let us love on you.
Your baby already thinks you’re everything.
